Legend states that the giant Antigoon demanded a high toll for ships that wanted to enter Antwerp. If the toll was not paid then the ship's crew had their hands cut off. The hero Brabo cut off the hand and head of the giant and threw the hand in the river. This fountain's statue shows Brabo throwing the giant's hand in the river Scheldt.
